Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I find the blog for a really old puzzle.

The best method of finding puzzle older than about 2 weeks is to use the "Google Search" feature which is reached by clicking the "Search using Google" below the main table.
You will see three panels which allow you to search for the blogs by serial number or by using a unique phrase known to be somewhere on the page you are looking for
If this fails, try method 3 (b) below.
Using the serial number is much superior, especially the UK serial number, which is used in the London Times newspaper for the original publication.

2. How do I find the blog for a recent puzzle that has just 'slipped off' the list.

Calculate the UK Serial number - you cannot use the Oz number. Click on the oldest puzzle in the list to get to its blog.
Then successively click on the 'Previous Entry' just above the puzzle title until you see the missing puzzle as indicated by the calculated UK Serial number.
This will take a number of clicks depending on the day of the week etc.

3. What to do if the link to a puzzle says "PROBLEM - Click Here" and lands me here?.

(a) The most common cause is that The Google Seach robots have failed to index the blog for this puzzle
This happens about every 3 months.
Proceed as follows
Click on the link for the puzzle with the next lower serial number
Successively click on the 'Next Entry' just above the puzzle title until you see the missing puzzle
This will take a number of clicks depending on the day of the week etc.
OR - if that fails
Using the Google Search facility, try to find the blog as in 1 above.
(b) Very occasionally, the blogger omits the serial number or enters an invalid one,
In this case, use the Google Search facility based on the uk serial number or a phrase in the puzzle to try to find it.
Sometimes it may be necessary to search the puzzle archives using the link under the calendar at the top right of any puzzle blog.

In Any Case
If the puzzle is very recent or you are still unsuccessful, send me an email about the problem (use the email link on the main page) including a copy of the correct page's address in the address panel in your Browser.
It will look something like 'times-xwd-times.livejournal.com/1177958.html'
I can fix the problem for the next 10 days or so but not permanently.
