I developed this simple but useful piece of software for my own purposes because I needed it.
You know those scraps of paper you scribble things to remember on and then promptly lose?
The Daily Jogger is designed to replace them.
You know the situation:
You are in the middle of a complicated modification to a program, have just thought what you could buy your girl(boy)friend for her(his) birthday or remembered that the boss wants that report you promised tomorrow.
It is 5.30 p.m., you must go home
now. So you grab a scrap of paper, write down a few notes for yourself to jog the old brainbox tomorrow morning, stuff it in your shirt pocket or desk drawer or leave it on your desk where you are bound to see it tomorrow, and run for the train! And tomorrow you cannot remember where you put the scrap of paper!
There are dozens of beautifully structured, complicated schedule planners with yearly planners, monthly planners, daily planners, prioritised to do lists, project control sheets, reminder pop-ups, contact databases etc., etc.
But I couldn't find
a simple, stand alone electronic scrap of paper to meet my unstructured, more casual way of working.Sure, I could keep a Notepad text file and that worked O.K. if I remembered where I saved the file and Notepad is not exactly user friendly.
So I wrote Daily Jogger.
I have since added a neat alarm system, a calendar and some useful editing functions.
An Unexpected Bonus
Since I began using Daily Jogger on a regular basis, I have found it really useful as a kind of permanent Clipboard.
I use it to assemble bits of text together from several sources by copying and pasting to the Daily Jogger text box, highlight them and then save them all together to a file. This is specially useful for collecting miscellaneous bits and pieces from the Internet.
Daily Jogger
installs itself into your Startup Group with the command line: "DJOGGER STARTUP" so that it appears automatically when you boot up.That's when you can read what you typed in yesterday or whenever.
The screen is mainly a simple Text Box which can be edited in the usual way, typing, deleting, copying and even tabbing to produce columns (I'm quite proud of that trick - not easy).
By all means add the pearls of wisdom you thought up in the shower this morning.
Click on Close or Minimise the window if you prefer it.
Daily Jogger also installs a shortcut or icon to itself in its own Group (Daily Jogger) from where you may wish to drag it directly on to your desktop (Windows 95 style), to your Accessories group (Windows 3.1) or, what I prefer, add it to the Microsoft Office Toolbar if you have one.
This normal shortcut uses the command "DJOGGER" with no parameter.
At the end of the day, or at any time you please, double click on the Normal Shortcut (Icon) and you will see your Daily Jogger again.
Add anything new and delete anything you've finished with.
You will have noticed one or two other features by now.
Alarms
Click on the picture of a
red alarm clock at the top of the screen and you can set up to ten neat personal reminder alarms which will jog your memory for those important appointments, so long as Daily Jogger is running or minimised. The Toolbar
The Toolbar gives you instant access to a number of useful functions rather than using the clumsy old menu, which is there for some less common functions. Point the mouse at any of the small icons at the top of the screen and you will see a yellow Tooltip to remind you what each icon does..
Action on Startup
Click on one of the three options to determine how your Daily Jogger will appear when you boot up your computer. If you select "Minimised" then it will still start and activate any alarms that are due but will be minimised either on the Windows 95 Taskbar or on the Windows 3.1 desktop. If you select "No Start", then Daily Jogger will not execute at all on computer startup. However, the normal version will always appear when you start it other than at Startup.
Change Background Colour
Click on the small flag to change the window colour from the default grey.
By the way, I have tried to make it the flag of your own country. If your own flag is not there, you either live in an out of the way country whose flag I haven’t got or you have not correctly specified your location in the Control Panel. In these cases you will get either the US flag or an icon showing an artist’s pallet.
You can change the flag by replacing the small file FLAG999.ICO with an icon file of your choice, or use PALLET1.ICO or PALLET2.ICO which you will find in the DJOGGER Folder. They contain icons depicting artist’s pallets.
The most commonly used functions are available by clicking one of the icons on the toolbar.
Click on the above icons to view the help information specific to each function.
In each case a useful Tooltip appears when the mouse pointer covers the icon as a small yellow box.
If the icon has a red cross on it and the tooltip is in grey, that function is not currently available because it is not relevant. For instance, you cannot "Save Changes" until some changes have been made.
Close or Save Changes and CloseClick here or press Alt and F4 together to save any changes and close your Daily Jogger.
Save ChangesClick here to save any changes to the text box but continue working.
Use this option if you prefer not to switch your computer off and just minimise Daily Jogger.
Quit Without SaveClick here if you have made changes to the text box you wish to discard.
MinimiseClick here to Minimise your Daily Jogger without closing it.
Find TextClick here and you can search for any text string in the main text box. Searching is in a forward direction starting at the current insertion point. You are presented with a default string of either the current selection or the previous string searched for.
Repeat FindClick here to search again for the previous text string. Searching is in a forward direction starting at the current insertion point.
Additional search functions can be accessed via the
Click here to print the contents of the main text box to the default printer. If there is any text selected, which will be highlighted in blue, then only the selected text is printed. In either case you are requested to confirm the print option chosen. The
Print Menu contains additional print related options. Cut Selection Ctrl / XClick here to transfer the current text selection highlighted to the Clipboard from where it may be moved to elsewhere in the text box or to a document in your favourite word processor. Pressing the [Ctrl] and X keys together has exactly the same effect.
Click here to copy the current text selection highlighted to the Clipboard from where it may be copied to elsewhere in the text box or to a document in your favourite word processor. Pressing the [Ctrl] and C keys together has exactly the same effect.
Click here to copy the current text contents of the Clipboard to the text box at the insertion point or to replace the current selection if any. The contents of the Clipboard may be from elsewhere in the text box
Click here to set or modify any of the ten Reminder Alarms you can set. Pressing the [Alt] and A keys together has exactly the same effect.
Click here to view a convenient 100 year calendar . Pressing the [Alt] and C keys together has the same effect.
Click here or press F1 to view the Help File
The Menu CommandsThe Menu Commands provide access to four groups of functions.
The File Menu
This option allows you to either print or save to a file, some or all of the contents of the text box; to import an existing text file into the text box; to save your changes to the contents of the text box; or to exit with or without saving.
Copy all text to file
Allows you to specify a file to which the entire contents of the reminder text box will be saved. You can choose an existing file or specify a new one.
Load text from file
Allows you to import the contents of a text file into the reminder text box at the current insertion point (where the cursor is currently). You must choose an existing file.
Copy Selection to file
Allows you to specify a file to which only the highlighted text in the text box will be saved. You can choose an existing file or specify a new one.
Save Changes
Saves the contents of the reminder text box and continues. Use this option if you have made a lot of changes to the text box and wish to guard against accidental loss or if you prefer to leave your computer switched on permanently when, of course the automatic daily startup of the software will not occur.
Opens a sub-menu of print related options.
Print all Text
Allows you to send the contents of the reminder text box to your default Printer.
Print Selection
Exactly like the option "Print all Text" except that only the currently highlighted text in the text box is printed.
Setup Printer
Use this option if you wish to specify a different printer as your default printer before printing.
Exit
This option allows you to Quit Daily Jogger either with or without saving any changes you have made.
Finding Text
There are four options available to search for text within the Reminder text box.
All of them can also be invoked from the keyboard using the Function Key F3 either alone or in combination with the Shift, Control or Alt keys and the first two are available on the toolbar near the top of the Daily Jogger Screen .
Find Text [F3]
Use this option to find a specific piece of text in the reminder window. You will be asked to type in the required text and the computer will search forwards to find it.
Find Again [Ctrl]/[F3]
This option repeats the last search in a forwards direction.
Find Selection [Shift]/[F3]
To find a later instance of a particular piece of text, select it by dragging the mouse over the text with the left button depressed which will highlight the text, and then choose this option. The computer will search for a duplicate of the same text.
Find Previous [Alt]/[F3]
This option repeats the last search in a backwards direction.
Other Editing Functions
The three normal editing functions of: Cut, Copy and Paste to and from the Clipboard are also available to allow transfer of text both within the text box and between it and any word processor or editor.
The same functions can be accessed using [Ctrl]/X, [Ctrl]/C and [Ctrl]/V respectively or by clicking on the corresponding toolbar icons.
The Help Menu
This group allows you to access the Help System with specific options to get information on
Registration and Authorisation of the software. The Tools Menu
The first two items in this group allows you to access the Alarms System or view the calendar. These items are exactly the same as clicking on either
The third item "Options" gives you access to the customisable aspects of the software.
The first three items : "Show on Startup", "Minimise on Startup", and "No Startup" allow you to specify whether Daily Jogger is invoked in normal size when you boot up your computer, starts up but is minimised, or is not started automatically. These options are exactly the same as the three options grouped under "Action on Startup" on the main form.
The fourth option "Change Colour" is exactly the same as clicking on the small flag icon near the bottom of the form.
The fifth option allows you to customise the duration of the beeping when an
alarm becomes due. When an alarm is invoked, an optional sound effect may be heard which you specify when you set the alarm. In addition, the alarm message is displayed accompanied by a "beeping" or "clicking" sound about every second until the alarm is acknowledged by pressing Enter or clicking on "OK". The duration of this beeping phase can be set to between 1 and 120 seconds before the alarm goes silent and just shows an animation of a moving alarm clock. The Register Menu
This option allows you to invoke the
Registration Procedure. which allows you to register Daily Jogger by safe Credit Card payment and the Authorisation Procedure. which allows you to fully enable Daily Jogger when you have received the special Authorisation Code. You can set up to ten personal alarms which will each display whatever text message you wish and be accompanied by any of the large range of sounds available with Windows as .WAV files.
Click on the Alarm clock icon or on the Alarms Menu Item and you will see a screen which allows you to do any modifications to the alarms.
There is a maximum of TEN alarms, each corresponding to a line of controls on the screen and the procedure is entirely intuitive.
The Text Message
Choose whichever one you wish and type in the text box a short reminder message such as Buy a bunch of flowers tonight.
Setting Alarm Time and Sound Effects
Time and Date
Click on the corresponding button under the
Set Alarm Time and Sound heading and a small Calendar will appear. Choose a date for the first occurrence of this reminder. Simply click on one of the small downward arrows to change the month or year. Similarly click on the small arrows and select the time you wish as hours and minutes. Click on OK to select the date and time displayed or click on Cancel if you change your mind. The time of the next reminder is displayed under the heading Time and Date.Reminder Sound Effects
Click on the appropriate
Set Alarm Time and Sound button and then on the Sound button on the Calendar and choose the sound effect you prefer. You can elect to designate it as the default when it will not be necessary to specify a sound for subsequent alarms that you set. However, if you prefer to use several different sounds you can customise your choice by clicking on the Sound button whenever you set or modify an alarm. Windows provides a range of sound effects such as the grunts and growls of the jungle or you can create your own using the recording facility provided by Windows such as SNDREC.EXE.You will be asked to choose any of the various .WAV files that are on your computer.
You get a chance to hear your selection before making up your mind.
If you do not want an audible warning, choose the file SILENCE.WAV.
The choice of sound effects can become quite large since the list of choices represents all of the .WAV files on your main hard disk drive (the one containing WINDOWS). Many of the sound files on your computer may be quite unsuitable for alarm sounds as many applications install quite specialised sounds and can make the list unreasonably long.
To reduce this number, proceed as follows:
Click on the
You will then be presented with a similar list of sounds where you can select as many as you like to disable.
When you have finished selecting all those you don’t want, click on "Done" and those sound files will no longer appear in the list of available alarm sounds.
Re-creating the list of Sound Effects
From time to time you may add new sound files to your computer that you may wish to use for Alarm sound effects.
To do this, proceed as follows:
Click on the
This will cause the program to search your entire hard disk drive for .WAV files and so detect the presence of new ones.
Of course, if you have previously disabled some of the sound files, then you will have to repeat that procedure to disable them again as in the
above sectionAlarm Repeats
Select one of the
Alarm Repeat options such as Daily or Weekly if you want the reminder to keep appearing.I find it useful to specify Daily even for one-off reminders that must be done some time in the future so that I get reminded if I ignore the first one. Then I only delete the reminder when I have actually done it!
To delete a reminder, simply select Disabled and it will be deleted once you click on OK.
Saving the Alarm Settings
When finished click on the OK button.
The Unregistered Shareware Version
/B>The Daily Jogger functions exactly the same as the registered (paid for) version EXCEPT:
1. There is a Nag Screen which appears when Daily Jogger starts which prompts you to register the software and allows you to enter the secret code which will fully enable the software.
2. This Nag Screen will stay for a random period, starting at 5 seconds and gradually increasing the longer you continue to use the unregistered version.
3. The text box containing your pearls of wisdom is limited to 400 characters instead of the generous 32000 characters allowed in the registered version.
4. Only one Reminder Alarm is available instead of ten independent alarms in the registered version.
I hope you understand why these irksome restrictions are necessary. I know you would not dream of continuing to use something you haven't paid for for years and years but it's all those other less honest b******s I'm thinking about.
And I need the money!
32 bit Version for Windows 95 or NT.
I do have a 32 bit Version of the Daily Jogger software which functions exactly the same as the Shareware Version. I am not proposing to market it at this time since it provides no advantages that I am aware of and more than triples the size of the .ZIP file. If you specifically want it, I can arrange to send it for a nominal extra charge.
Daily Jogger
requires a minimum of a 286 PC. running Windows 3.1 with about 0.6 mb. of free hard disk space if you haven’t already got the run time library VBRUN300.DLL installed - less than 100kb. if you have.Once you have received your personal Authorisation code, you should proceed as follows to convert the slightly limited Shareware version of Daily Jogger to the fully functional Registered Version.
Start Daily Jogger in the usual way and either click on the Enter Authorisation Code button which appears on startup as part of that annoying Nag-screen, or Click on the Menu item Help and then on the option Enter Authorisation Code.
You will see a dialog box with a place for your name, as supplied with your registration payment, and a place for the authorisation code which will be sent to you by email.
The best way to ensure you enter both of these items accurately is to use Windows’ wonderful Clipboard.
1. Open the email containing the code and find the line containing both name and code. Select your name by holding the left button of the mouse down whilst you drag the cursor across to the end of your name.
2. Press [CTRL] / V to copy the selection into the clipboard. (By all means use the right mouse button if you have Windows 95).
3. Return to the Authorisation Dialog box (press [ALT]/[TAB} and paste the contents of the Clipboard into the box specifying Name by pressing [CTRL] / C.
4. Return to the email and repeat the above procedure to copy the Authorisation code into the appropriate place.
5. Click on Done.
That’s all there is to it - more accurate than direct typing.

Distribution of Software
This program may be freely distributed provided it is unmodified, no charge is made for the software, and all of the following files are included:
1) DJREADME.TXT - This File in text Form
2) DJOGGER.EXE - Executable File
3) DJOGGER.HLP - The Help File (Basically the same as DJREADME.TXT)
4) The various file named FLAGnnn.ICO

6) SETUP.EXE - The customised Setup file
7) SETUPKIT.DLL - Support file for the setup process.
8) COMMDLG.VBX, COMMDLG.DLL and VBRUN300.DLL Runtime support files
By far the best option is to use the compressed file which will be named DJ16S.ZIP, DJ16F.ZIP, or something similar. Self-extracting versions will similarly be named DJ16SZIP.EXE, DJ16FZIP.EXE etc.
Compressed files whose names include the letter F (Full Versions), have the runtime file VBRUN300.DLL included.
The file VBRUN300.DLL should be in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ directory. If you have not got it already, you may download it from the main Daily Jogger Web Page.
1) Copy the compressed .ZIP file (e.g. DJ16S.ZIP into a suitable Directory (Folder) such as C:\JUNK, and extract all the files the files in it using WINZIP, PKUNZIP or similar.
2) Read the file DJREADME.TXT using an editor or DJOGGER.HLP (silly me, you've already done that.)
3) Make sure you have got the file VBRUN300.DLL in your WINDOWS\ or WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ directory. Download it from the main Daily Jogger page if not.
4) Run the file SETUP.EXE and follow the instructions.
5) When installation is complete, you will be given the option to automatically delete the unzipped files in C:\JUNK (or wherever you put them) and/or the compressed .ZIP file.
6) Have fun organising your life as explained above.
7) IMPORTANT - Get Registered.
8) ALSO IMPORTANT - pass the .ZIP file on to a friend.
